Interesting Places to See in Port Moresby

Port Moresby, the traditional home of the Motu and Koitabu people, is the capital city of Papua New Guinea. Today, it is also home to thousands of people from the other 19 provinces, as well as people from other countries who are employed by both local and multinational companies.

National Botanical Garden
The National Capital Botanical Garden at the University of Papua New Guinea has a beautiful collection of orchids and other native flora.
Ela Beach
The white sandy beach of Ela Beach is a place to relax and enjoy the day.
Michael Somare Library
The library at the University of Papua New Guinea.
National Museum & Art Gallery
The museum is located next to the National Parliament.
Tabari Craft Market
in Boroko is a place to buy the beautiful bilums (string bags) handicrafts and jewellery.
Monthly Craft Markets
Each month there are big craft markets organized at four locations in the city. Ela Beach Craft market is held on the last Saturday of the month at the Ela Beach IEA Campus.

This World War II cemetery, where thousands of Australians are buried, is managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The ANZAC Day dawn service is held there each year.
Local Markets
Local food can be purchased at the markets. The main market is at Gordons, with others around the city.
Places of Worship
Christian churches are found throughout the city. St Mary's Catholic Cathedral in downtown Port Moresby has an interesting traditional East Sepik facade. There is a mosque in the suburb of Hohola.

The national Parliament House is a landmark of Port Moresby. It is located next to Independence Hill. With its interesting design, based on the Maprik haus tambaran (spirit house) of the East Sepik Province, it houses the country's 109 members. The beautiful and well-kept grounds and gardens are a must see for any visitor to Port Moresby.
Loloata Island Resort
has good swimming, snorkelling, fishing, scuba diving and boating. A Sunday smorgasbord is available to day visitors. Drive to the Tahira Marina (tel.: 325-8020) at Bootless Bay (20 minutes from the city) and leave the car there. Loloata Island is reached by ferry from the marina. The resort provides full board and has bar facilities. Tariffs are reasonable and children's rates are available. Bookings are required. Tel.: 325-8590.
Varirata National Park
is situated on the Sogeri Plateau, 46 km from Port Moresby. Visitors to the park can enjoy the native flora and fauna, and hear the birds-of-paradise in the morning.
